Brighton Surf...

Hot Pipe - Shoreham...
A popular break (previously due to it's easy access and parking...not
necessarily so now thanks to Shoreham Port Authority!). This wave breaks
from a concrete pier surrounding the hot pipe at Shoreham powerstation.
You'll find it on the East side of the harbour practically in front of the
powerstation's chimney that can be seen from miles around.
This break works on the lower side of mid-tide.

West Pier - Brighton...

The west Pier has been surfed since the sixties. Now disused it still can hold a
nice wave on clean groundswells. It can be a bit fickle year by year as the
sand bars change on the bottom. Usually surfed around low tide this break
can be good for beginners due to the sandy bottom and gentle waves.

Palace Pier - Brighton...
The Palace Pier, if your a local is probably the last place you will look for a wave when there's been a good prediction. But if I had a pound for all those days I've driven along Madeira Drive on the way to work and seen a nice couple of foot when there's been a forecast of flat I'd be a rich man! Works from the left hand side although I have also seen a few locals surfing down by the donut to the right hand side of the pier!

Brighton Marina...
A fast wave breaking over a chalk reef. Not for beginners. Respect the locals.

Lancing Beach...
My favorite break but that's probably because its my home break!
You will be surprised to know that we do get some very good waves down on Lancing Beach even when there's nothing to be had in Brighton.
But don't be fooled it's not for the faint hearted. As there's no shelter the cross winds can end up blowing you half way to Shoreham if your not careful and the beach dumps can be around 3-4 foot. But with all that said and done it can be very pleasant. I've often been out there on my own with a nice 2-3 clean swell. Works 2-3 hours before and after high tide. Don't bother turning up on a low as the tide goes miles out and the shallow sand bottom cant support any kind of wave.
The break is to the right of the Mermaid beside a rock groyne. Can get quite crowded ...Sometimes there's at least 4 of us out!

The Witterings...

Bracklesham and East Wittering
A southwesterly facing beach that picks up most channel groundswells due to
the swell wrapping around the Isle of Wight. Can get busy due to weekend
warriors but can take the crowds due to the size of the bay. Generally it
works on a pushing tide from around mid-tide although Braclesham can work
on a lower tide.

West Wittering
A nice situation amongst the sand-dunes, this break works over high tide.
You have to pay to get into the car-park though and this is quite expensive
in the summer (about £3). Also you can find that during hot weekends the
sea is full of bathers and you couldn't catch a wave without taking out a few
kids.
